was named our first Greiner Heating and Air Athlete of the Week for the new fall season. I was just reminded this week how long I’ve been at The Reporter. We didn’t even have to find a place to park. And last year Merriment on Main was made easier for us being that it took place right next door. News staffers have walked downtown to assignments in Town Square. Wood high schools and can quickly trek back to the office to file stories. The sports guys find themselves almost dead center between Vacaville and Will C. The bigger building offered us more separation between administration, editorial, advertising and circulation. We’re in tighter quarters but we’ve become tighter as a group working closer together. And there are many restaurant selections near by for lunch. The Vacaville Public Library Town Square is close enough to take a quick walk over to it to do some research. I try to take regular walks around the theater, into downtown, or to Andrews Park. There are stairs up to our office but also a convenient elevator for those who need it.ĭowntown is nice, and indeed convenient. I tell people we are located on the corner of Mason and Davis streets, next to the Umpqua Bank and very close to Brenden Threatres. I’m hoping more have adapted to the change now just as we have. I’ve also been informed on several occasions that customers have shown up at that location looking for the newspaper and finding Granite Expo, the new resident. Most have been informed of the change but it continues. Mail still comes to me with the Cotting Lane address. The newspaper hadn’t been downtown since 1992 when Publisher Richard Rico picked up the operation and moved it out to its expansive location on Cotting. I’ve been with The Reporter now for 27 years and have worked at four different locations (if you include the temporary space). The actual permanent move occurred just in time for Christmas, two weeks prior to the holiday. We moved over in October but took up temporary residence for two months in a suite below our current location. The exact anniversary date depends on who is talking. The Reporter is closing in on its one year anniversary at our 401 Davis Street location. A year ago I was up to my eyeballs in relocation, trying not to trip over toters in our Cotting Lane office (well, I did once, in front of everyone to my embarrassment), spending time trying to find safe homes for valuable archives, and putting out a newspaper, as we contemplated our move downtown.
